How thermal transfer technology works
Thermal transfer printing technology works with a precise heat transfer process in which color pigments are transferred from a ribbon to packaging or a label. A thermal print head, equipped with fine heating elements, is guided over the ribbon. The heating elements specifically heat the areas where printing is required. The heat melts the color pigments in the ribbon and they are transferred directly to the substrate.
The ink ribbon consists of a special ink layer that is activated by the effect of heat. Depending on requirements, different ribbon types such as wax, resin or blends can be used to adapt the print to specific materials and operating conditions. The result is a durable, high-resolution print with razor-sharp edges, ideal for text, barcodes, graphics or 2D codes.
This technology is particularly reliable for flexible packaging materials such as films or labels and ensures excellent print adhesion. It is also efficient as it does not require direct contact between the print head and substrate, which minimizes wear and extends the service life of the devices.
