Barrier coatings

Revolutionary guardians of product quality in the packaging industry

Exposure to light, especially UVA and UVB rays, can have harmful effects on food and non-food products by adversely altering fats, proteins, vitamins and other sensitive components. The use of barrier coatings in the packaging industry offers effective protection and represents a decisive step towards preserving the quality and longevity of products.

Consequences of unwanted exposure to light

Undesirable changes due to exposure to light, such as discoloration, loss of taste and smell and loss of nutrients, often result in increased food waste. The use of UV barrier coatings in composite structures provides efficient protection against such damage.

Advantages of using UV barrier coating

UV barrier coating not only prevents the damaging effects of artificial and natural light during storage, shipping and on-shelf display, but also contributes significantly to reducing food waste. UV barrier coating is an essential innovation in the packaging industry, helping to maintain the integrity and value of packaged products throughout their life cycle.

The PU-based clear UV barrier varnish RV20010 from Artience is designed for use in gravure printing or coating machines. It can be used in laminate structures for food, pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic, detergent or technical packaging, for example. Even for sensitive products that previously required aluminum barriers, the use of Artience's RV20010 UV barrier coating offers a sustainable alternative. This opens up new possibilities for product presentation and, thanks to the elimination of aluminum, the production of recyclable single-material packaging.

  • Exclusive use of inorganic UV light absorbers
  • Suitable for use on all common printing substrates for flexible packaging
  • Filters more than 95% of UV rays (200-380 nm)
  • High transparency, enables approx. 80% transmission of visible light (380-780 nm)
  • Use as a 1-component system, also for sterilization up to 125°C, 30 minutes
  • No haptic or mechanical changes to the packaging product
  • Enables a high degree of standardization of the product portfolio
