CHROMOS has been supporting the new profession of packaging printer since January 1, 2021 by designing an inter-company course at the HP Indigo Demo Center
New technologies require new knowledge
The packaging printing industry is characterized by its wide variety of products, different printing processes and specific markets and perspectives. This also characterizes the transformation of the entire industry. Digital printing is another forward-looking printing technology. In order to respond to these changes and prepare future packaging printers EFZ for the challenges of the future, the new job profile "Packaging printer EFZ" was created.
What is new about this job profile?
Apprentices can now be trained as "packaging printers EFZ" according to the new job profile. The new job profile provides the packaging printing industry with new positive impetus for the future. The training takes particular account of the new requirements of the times and increases the attractiveness of the packaging printing industry. This new occupational profile replaces the profession of flexographic printer EFZ.
Facts about the new training
- Apprentices can now also be trained in digital printing.
- The three printing technologies flexographic, gravure and digital printing are now combined in one job description.
- The practical training takes place in a printing company for flexible packaging, label or corrugated board printing.
- The focus at the vocational college is on packaging printing.
- The 4 inter-company courses focus on flexographic, gravure and digital printing and color mixing.
- The duration of the apprenticeship is three years
The new job profile expands the previously known flexographic printer apprenticeship with additional skills in digital and gravure printing technologies.

Training program for ÜKs (inter-company courses)
The inter-company courses complement the training in the vocational practice and at school. Vocational basics are learned and practiced in the following courses:
- Digital printing
- Practical color mixing
- Gravure form production and printing technology
Training at the HP Indigo demo and training center in Glattbrugg
In order to provide the apprentices with practical application and knowledge building in the field of digital printing, this training course will take place for two days at CHROMOS Group AG in the HP Indigo demo and training center.
We have created the course program tailored to the apprentices based on the specified competencies from the training plan of our application specialists.
In a theoretical and a practical part, the apprentices are taught the following
- imparts general knowledge about digital printing in label and packaging printing
- an overview of HP Indigo label and packaging machines.
- the possibilities and advantages of digital printing compared to conventional label printing.
- practical handling and printing technology on a digital printing machine.
